3 Brainerd educators earn Above and Beyond awards

Brainerd Public Schools recognized three outstanding staff members as recipients of this year’s Above and Beyond Awards. The annual award honors employees who inspire others with their positive attitude and consistently exceed expectations to help students succeed.
Emilee Freed, a special education teacher at Brainerd High School, has served the district for 17 years. Reading from her nomination, Assistant Principal Craig Kotsmith described Freed as “the heartbeat behind Unified Warriors and the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. She builds bridges among students, ensuring every learner has a place to shine. What sets her apart is her unwavering advocacy for some of our most vulnerable learners. She helps them discover confidence, friendships, and opportunities to thrive.”
Kristin Smith, a third grade teacher at Garfield Elementary and Brainerd High School track and field coach, has been with Brainerd Public Schools for 36 years. Forestview Middle School Principal Tammy Stellmach shared, “Kris takes the time to understand each student’s needs, offering extra help when needed. She fosters a love of learning every single day. Whether it’s breaking down a math problem or helping a student read, she makes children feel confident and excited to learn. Her dedication and kindness leave a lasting impact on every child.”
Wendy Smolke, the building secretary at Harrison Elementary, has worked in the district for 27 years. Principal Jim Conrad, reading from her nomination, noted, “(Wendy) is a calming force, a mentor, and the soul of our school community. Her warm presence, tireless behind-the-scenes work, and ability to anticipate everyone’s needs set her apart. She cares deeply for the students, staff, and family members at Harrison Elementary.”
All Brainerd Public Schools employees are eligible for the Above and Beyond Award, and nominations may be submitted by anyone in the community. Nominations are collected each spring, with announcements made when the nomination window opens.
